Hello Slingshot,
Congratulations!!!

We did not know you received first prize. That is great. We scream when we read it!!!!

You are great and all God's Blessings go to you for all the strength and effort you made for us all to win.  We will support any part of the world you go, (smile). I am sorry I missed out seeing the picture the TV station took of you. If you have any pictures of the parade of your band we were in can you forward any pictures you have for us to see.
Hope to receive a reply from you soon.

Slingshot,

How are you? Sorry we couldn’t connect for Mash. But given the crime situation in the country it was safer that way. By the way, let me know as early as possible if you still need the Essequibo location for your friend Rohit. Also, are you still going ahead with the video filming for that song we discussed on the phone early February?

Any plans for Carifesta?

Stay well!

Dave

Dear Slingshot,

I hope I am not too late to congratulate you on your performance during Mash 2008. You were wonderful on Mash day and looked strong on the float. No more horse carts for you, right? LOL

I just want you to know my family and I were impressed with your float and costumes. We were happy when we read you copped the top prizes.

I just want to say thank you for participating in the Mash Parade with you.  It was a dream come true!  I always wanted to participate in a Mash parade and my dream was finally answered.
The costume was beautiful and you have such a kind warm heart to give those costume FREE to people to participate.
I went to Guyana to celebrate my birthday with my parents and saw your ad on the local TV to join your band.   Will you be at Caribana in Canada?  I will be at Caribana and if you will attend, I will look out for you just to say hello to you.  I love your music.  Your email address I found on the web and was happy to be able to contact you.
Hope our paths cross again in life. I reside in New Jersey.

Take care and keep up the good work.
Good Bless and Happy Easter.

I am sending greetings from the UK and hoping you are ok.  We are not hearing anything from you and do not know if you are on your feet again. Please write and let me know.  Can you say whether Joyclyn is still residing in UK?  I tried calling her but the phone keeps ringing out.

I will be emailing you some photos taken at work. I hope you like them.

Love and best wishes to you.

I only got to know John recently through this group but he has always impressed me with his measured speech and comments.
He obviously did a fine job flying the flag in Guyana.
I heard him on a radio program the other day on “Voice of Guyana” and he is certainly a very gifted artiste.
By him being in Guyana for the Mash 2008, he kinda lets us in the Diaspora off the hook because we can now say that at least the Diaspora is doing their bit.
Big thanks therefore to Mr. DrePaul!

Hi Slingshot and Ingrid,
I am so glad to hear that you had a safe journey home. I arrived in Maine in a driving snowstorm at 2:00 am, culminating a 21 hour journey from Guyana.
Slingshot, as the plane lifted off from Cheddi Jagan, my eyes welled with tears... I cannot remember a time in my life when I have experienced such a wonderful time. The Guyanese people made me feel welcome, secure and befriended. Unfortunately, (said tongue-in-cheek) thanks to you, there is no place in Georgetown that I can go without being recognized  While walking in the market any number of people came up to me and said, "you are that guy with Slingshot", when Maggie was showing me the library at UG, a student came up to me and said, "I know you...you're that Don King guy with Slingshot", cab drivers repeatedly told me that they had seen me downtown with Maggie... frankly, I loved it, every minute. […]

Anyway, I've rambled long enough...now I have to go figure out how to move my base of operation down to the Caribbean....and then find something to do in Guyana.
Have a great day.
Fair Winds,
Captain Mike Haskell

Subject: Mash report from Mike Haskell

Dear Listers,
I apologize for being tardy getting this out...I have been on a whirl-wind tour of Georgetown and have not had ready access to a computer. Below are my observations of Mash 2008.
First, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Slingshot for honoring me by allowing me to be on your float...in a word, it was FANTASTIC!!!! Slingshot, you are a gentleman, an icon and an inspiration to all those who come in contact with you. I will always cherish my association with you at Mash 2008. Thank you and thanks to Ingrid and Donna...and thank you for the CD, I can hardly wait to get to my CD player.
Second, while there was clearly a subdued atmosphere around the Mash celebration (I understand that the stands at National Park were relatively empty) the mood turned to one of celebration as the day and night wore on. I can understand people's hesitancy to venture out not knowing whether or not someone was going to be crazy enough to open fire on the crowds in Georgetown...thankfully, it was a day of joyous celebration.
Next, I want all the "tourists" out there to realize that Georgetown is not a pirate camp filled with brigands and thieves waiting to fall upon every unsuspecting tourist and rob them. During my time in Georgetown I walked freely AND comfortably through just about every part of the city...well, I did stay out of "Globe Yard"... Slingshot warned me that if I went in there, even the police wouldn't come get me. But really and truly, I did not feel the least bit uncomfortable wherever I went... I walked alone, I walked with Maggie, I walked during the day, I walked at night....and I was never accosted....well, except by the people who who came up to me on the street with "Hello, Cap...you're that 'Don King Guy' with Slingshot, or some similar comment....always with a handshake, always with a smile..and, God love the entrepreneurial spirit of the Guyanese, with a business card in their hands and a ready explanation of the business they had and how it could serve me.
Mash was wonderful...I had an awesome experience...and the rest of my stay in Georgetown was equally wonderful. I visited the National Library, the Parliament Building, the markets...looovvvvveeee the markets!!! Attended church with Maggie and heard her give an outstanding presentation at the Georgetown Toasmaster's meeting. The only negative??? my stay was wwwaaayyyyy too short. I will be returning...this time to go up into the Rupuunni highlands...and when I return, I'm taking a couple of extra runs with me so that Guyana will BEAT Jamaica next time...one run, we only needed ONE RUN!!!!
Maggie has my camera with a couple hundred shots of Mash...shortly, she will be sending them to me to post.
Fair Winds,
Captain Mike Haskell

Anyway this is to say “thanks” for coming back to Guyana. Don’t stay away too long as we all miss you very much!

Bro Sling!  I am getting to know you a little more.
I have just heard you sing a Mash song on Guyana Radio 98.1FM on-line and I was not aware we were in such starried company.
Congratulations!
Man you are just great and you sound like a devotee of the Mighty Sparrow (except, of course, younger ... and better)!   We ARE not worthy!
Take care my bro and MASH DEM UP at what looks to be a fantastic Mashramani 2008.

Sling
This will amuse you. We were coming back on the big ferry after the competition, and one of the older singers was serenading all the tired folks on the boat. Two of the songs he sang (accapella) was your “Home Sweet Home” and another one of yours. May I attempt to say he sounded a bit better that the original (smile). But it was a thrill to hear him sing the two songs in their entirety. Then he proceeded to sing Charlie Pride. Man you ranking in the big Leagues

Nazim Hussain
