Last evening the Mash Camp of Derek Moore caught on fire. The
beautiful Fisheries, Crops and Livestock float that was described
in yesterday's Sunday Chronicle's Pepperpot was completely
destroyed. Slingshot's "Wake up my Guyana" float was burnt at the
back. Last night the designer and crew were ripping out the burnt
material and trying to replace it all in time for the 07:30
assembly this morning by the Astor Cinema. Slingshot says that the
"Wake up my Guyana" float will be like the Phoenix ready for a new
start. Talk about baptism by fire!

Subject: Query on Availability of your CDs in Guyana
Dear Jean DrePaul
My wife and I had seen your video of 'Beautiful Guyana' (My
Eldorado Dream?) a couple of times on TV over the last month or
so. It would be brilliant for us when we visit family & friends in
UK - actually show pictures of where we have been for the last
nine years! […]
Then we caught your “Slingshot Live” show with Nazim (whom we know
from GRC) and realised a bit more of who the performer is. We
didn't ring in on the show - not appropriate for us to 'cadge' a
CD. So I decided to go for a walk in town and try and buy a copy
for my wife for Christmas. Walked all of Regent Street - two shops
knew your name but nobody had your CDs for sale!
So I decided to try The Pegasus but you had already checked out.
However a couple of staffers undertook to 'find' a copy for me -
collected today an original copy of “Jump For Carnival” […]
I did pay for it! But it doesn't solve my problem - is the video
available? Maybe it will be on the DVD your web site says is
coming. We would encourage you to put it out on Video CD or DVD -
certainly we would buy it and I think several other ex-pats would
too as 'presents to take 'home' ' and for supporters if for
no-other reason. […]
The second thing is why oh why aren't your CDs available here to
buy commercially? […] Not making proper ones available (at a
sensible price!) only encourages the Guyanese trick of making
illegal copies particularly if there are any real copies in the
Country […]
When you come for Mash please leave some sort of stock somewhere
so that you can make something for your artistry and give those of
us who dislike 'stealing' an opportunity of owning and giving away
(so spreading the 'Guyana as a tourist destination' message).
Very best wishes for the New Year

John, I received your CDs […] and they are very GOOD if I may say
so.
My wife's sisters have already borrowed them to listen to the
Guyanese songs.
Good stuff and keep it going. I heard about the New York seminar
and don't forget to send me a copy of your presentation.
Good luck

Subject: Guyana Folk fest- Slingshot
Hi All,
[…] I met Slingshot, his wife and his daughter at the festival.
The festival was a great success. I think they need a larger
arena.
WELL!!! Our friend Slingshot is quite a performer. He stepped on
stage with lots of energy, took out his slingshot from his back
pocket and started his thing. He started singing about Berbice and
ended up reminding us about all that's good about Christmas in
Guyana.
His performance was really top class. The crowd loved it. We were
all jumping and waving our flags. It was good to see the audience
so enthusiastic about one of our own.
Did anyone know Slingshot could wine up? Yes he can... He was in a
groove and having fun. His wife looked on with pride... she (sic)
hubby was a winner at the festival.
Congrats Slingshot on a great performance (looking forward to the
next time... maybe you'll sing about the missing pussy cat. ;))))
Have a good week all.

Slingshot, […]
So where will you be in NY? Maybe we could pop in to hear you live
and in person. That would be so cool. […] if you happen to get
this, just drop me a note, if not I will catch you on one of your
future performances.
I listened to your music and became hooked immediately.
"Remembering: Beeda's Song" and "Sweet Island Woman" made me feel
calm and serene like I was back on the islands sitting on the
beach sipping cocktails and watching the moonlight.
You are an extremely talented and diverse musician. Few musicians
can make that transition from up-tempo to ballads ... you master
that beautifully! I have yet to pick a favorite, I will let you
know which one soon... […]
Good luck with your performances and speeches this weekend.

SLINGSHOT Who gave you that name, anyhow? I've listened to most of
the tracks. The early album was clearly a dedication to your wife,
which is touching.
[other] recordings sound nice and relaxed, and there are some very
crisp horn sections, I suppose from Frankie. The song about New
York Carnival had a nice Trini feel.

Subject: The Music Of Slingshot...!
[...] Slingshot's 2 CD's are pleasing and melodious. What a change
from much of the music from Guyanese performers!
[...] There is obviously a lot of Trinidadian influence in
Slingshot's music (Ingrid?), but the result would have done any
top Trini musician proud. For me though, the best part is that the
music oozed love for Guyana and things Guyanese. It sings praises
to events and places that can occur in the life of most Guyanese.
And, as if the lyrics of songs like "Nana & Nani" are not proof
enough of Slingshot's fine musical abilities, the man even
ventures out into music's "badlands" - instrumentals. "No. 63
Beach" and "Annabelle, Come Dance" are beautiful melodies,
especially the former.! [...] I am keeping these "special" copies
for life - as a special souvenir.
Thank you for the great music, Slingshot!

Wayne and Cocoreef, I would like to thank you both for giving me
great insights to the Guyanese culture. Last Saturday, I received
Cocoreef's lastest works and man alive I thought for a second that
I was Guyanese! Thank you! Man, I tellya Coco, I was listening to
"No. 63 Beach" and I closed my eyes, I thought I was there! I felt
that cool Carribean breeze, sipping a little rum and coke. Another
thing, it was a lot cheaper then buying a ticket to
Georgetown!
Trip to Guyana: $1300
Buying Guyanese music: $27.50

Dear John,
You got to change that name ... too many 'dear john' letters can't
be good. Anyway, […] while listening to your CDs, I began to
wonder, why, if we have such good music by 'locals' we don't hear
more of it on our local radio. [...]
Your music took me back to the 70's, my teens, the joy of growing
up, the Merrymen type of sound. I thought "Parkway Jam"
particularly good. There is a story in every song, and that you
are a talented 'story teller' shows right through in the lyrics.
Hope the CDs bring you much success,
Jill

[...] Slingshot's CD's [...] are wonderful! Congratulations!
The Soca one - Jump for Carnival was great, but the GT one Home
Sweet Home was even better. I felt so many emotions listening to
it. I teared up whenever I heard the word Guyana mentioned. I
danced to the catching and very traditional beats and laughed at
the many double sayings.
The Dutty Lion (music man) came to visit, and next ting yuh know
both of us were dancing - right up under each other haha. Then I
heard the study door slam and heard my 16 year old
mumbling and stuuupppssing - the two y'all dis fret meh! Maybe she
thought it was the big make up - but No kanoka....is just the
music mek so for a lil while..
I like There was a Time and Berbice River Crossing - nice, slow,
roll yuh bumsie when yuh dancing songs... Berice Gyal makes me
want to be one...and Just a Dream* is the song you have to find a
dancing pardner who will touch all four corners of the room...
Wonderful works - and a great future - Congrats Ingrid and Coco..

Hi Slingshot:
I got the CD's last Thursday and I've been really enjoying them.
My kids came home for the Easter break and were listening too.
It's a bit different from the dub they're more familiar with but
they got into it as well. Your music has that truly unique
Guyanese flavor and the lyrics can really take you right back. I
got choked up a few times on those lyrics. [...]

Slingshot sounds great. I think he has a few hits here. His
rendition of "De missing Pussy Cat" reminded me of the singer Red
Plastic Bag of Barbados who was last year's Crop-over king. The
musical mixtures were somewhat reminiscent of the Merry-men as
were the lyrics and vocals.
Great job coco.
