Hello John
It was a pleasant surprise to hear from you after your busy period with Mash.  And “congrats” on coming First Place in the Big Band and Second Place on the Floats after all those obstacles.  What a great success! I guess your head must have swollen so big with success and fame. […]
I guess you are preparing to go somewhere else before you come to London for our Fun Day and Dance.  I will be looking forwarding to see again in person.
Bye for now and hope to hear from you soon.

Slingshot, congratulations on your Mash trophies!  That was a nice display of both guts and talent on Mash day, and you deserve all the accolades your way!
Believe it or not, but this will come as a surprise to you.  Do you know I have followed your musical career since your teenage days performing at Penguin Nite Club in New Amsterdam?

Yes, John, there are quite a number of us in the country who still remember you and “Lonely Bulls”.  You all were great musicians and entertainers.  John, you were the first local at that time to have long hair!  And a Berbician at that!!! Man, those were the days!!

I used to sit at Penguin’s bar and watch you on that dark-brown Supro rhythm guitar, Rudy on his red Futurama lead guitar, Tony Mack on his Premier drum set, Shamboy on that locally made red bass guitar, perform all those wonderful Shadows and Los Indios instrumentals.

You country boys were excellent!!  Rudy was really good on the lead never missing a note while you held down the rhythm with fantastic strumming, as Tony kept the band tight with his drumming.  I would admire the huge bull skull with red bulbs in the eye sockets.  That was a touch of creativity on you guys part.

I even had the courage at one time to sing with you all.  That was at a dance at Town Hall.  Remember? There was saxophone player with you all that night.  Boy did I make myself a total jackass!!

You and I should get together, when you come to Berbice again, and talk about those wonderful days.  You should know by now I have a good memory.  Here is my address and phone number […]

John, keep up the good works and continue to make Guyana, and especially Berbice, proud of her native son!  You have certainly come a long way from those “Lonely Bulls” days, my friend!

Congratulations again on your successes!

Ron

[The following is my reply to such a dear fan:  someone who has certainly opened up a floodgate and brought back such a deluge of wonderful memories from/of my teenage days -- Slingshot]

Dear friend Ronny,

Oh my gosh…!!!  You won’t even start to ever understand what you have done by sending me that email…!!  I have re-read it so many, many times with each reading bringing even more memories…!  At one point my eyes were wet with joyful tears, as I reflected on those teenage days, which you have so wonderfully brought back in color and descriptions.

I’m presently lost for words as to where to begin.  However, I just want to tell you how much I appreciate all you have written.  You brought back some treasured memories of my teenage days with my group “Lonely Bulls”.

You have touched me with your detailed description of our equipment.  Even I have forgotten some of the details you have so carefully stored in your heart and memory.  I thank you, Ron

I am certainly going to keep your phone number and address safely, as I want very much to ferret out any and everything you can remember about me and the other guys.

If you remember anything more about “Lonely Bulls”, Penguin, and other places we once played, write them down.  Try hard to remember anything on the patrons and fans frequenting La Bennett’s Penguin during those periods.  Store safely such info.  Or send it to me through emails and attachments, etc.

Do visit my website and check the old photos there on “Lonely Bulls” days.

Thank you for such a reawakening of memories.

My book Slingshot: From No. 63 Beach to Madison Square Garden is still in manuscript form.  With your brief description of “Lonely Bulls” in mind, I have to include your input.

Stay in touch!

Best regards …

Hello Slingshot,

“Congratulations” on a job well done with Pirates!  We saw you on TV blowing kisses to the crowd who greeted you with pride.  Love what you are doing for Guyana.  Ever thought of going into politics? (lol)  Geena

Dear Mr. Slingshot,

My name is Mala Singh and I am writing you because my brother-in-law loves your music and he wants to congratulate you for the spectacular performance on the float today.  His name is Wayne.  He is a big fan of yours, and also my three nieces and myself, too!

We borrow your CD from a friend and we all would sit down and listen to your music.  Our favorite is "Wake up Guyana".

We all love your music and may God bless you always!

Hello Slingshot,

I want to say “congratulations” to you and the Pirates!

You all did an excellent job.  Your band was by far the most entertaining.  I watched with my parents and friends near the corner of Thomas and Church Streets.  I had pushed through the crowd and touched your feet when your horse cart stopped there.  It gave me a good feeling just doing that.  My friends were excited just seeing you in person.

Thank you for giving us here in Guyana hope.  When you didn’t get sponsorship, you appealed to the masses.  And from what I heard you say on Ch 6 tonight, regular people came out and assisted.  That goes to show you that there is still hope here in Guyana.

I hope you win something when they announce the results.

Thank you for reading this mail and hoping you get the chance to reply.  I would love that.

Love from Dianne

This is great. Congratulations Slingshot. I actually got some pics of him from someone in a Guyanese group. I like the slingshot around his neck. The revelers seemed to be having a grand time. I keep saying I'll be going to Mash but it's just not happening. Man! Darn it! One of these days it will happen.

Dear Slingshot,

Congratulations to you and your band of Pirates for putting on such a great show along the road to the National Park.

Also, thank you very much for posing with me when my mom took a photo of us.  I will always treasure it.  You are such a simple person and so considerate with your fans.  You are not bigety like some others when they visit here in Guyana.

I live at […] and my phone number is […].  You are invited anytime to come and visit, as you are most welcomed in our home.

Thank you again for stopping and taking the photo with me.  Good luck in the results!  I am sure you will do great!  That is if the judges are not one sided.

Say hello to your beautiful family.

Ramona

Hi Slingshot, very sorry to hear about the set back.

You have the right spirit so I’m sure you will overcome.

I will spread the word (edit and circulate your email below) to some people who may be able to help.

Please let me know what the monetary target/shortfall is so I can give people a sense of the financial assistance needed.  Also if you list the kind of material assistance you need I can pass this on also to contacts in Guyana.

Best of luck to you - hope the “Pirates” get to sail.

Keep your spirits up.
Tafawa

[…] I am writing to let you know that I feel your cause is a worthy one. I think it is high time that Guyanese started to appreciate the degree of creativity and hard work that goes into producing music and movies. It is not okay to steal people's music. Even though we are a poor nation, we must learn to pay for music, software, movies and in so doing help our local music industry.
Best wishes and thanks for taking up this issue and I hope moral support counts for something!

Sandra.
