I share my thoughts on four giants linked in my mind with that village - my cousins Raymond [Drepaul], John [Drepaul], Sergio Bhairo and Anthony McIntosh. It's in draft.

Hey Slingshot,
Its always a pleasure to see my Guyanese people doing their things and I will always remember what you told me, to go break a leg for Guyana, & I promise that I will strive my best. I have my first solo album releasing soon in about another month and a half. Can't wait for that.
By God’s grace, I hope all goes well too.
Take care and all the best.

On behalf of the Guyanese American Cultural Association of Central Florida (GACACF) and on my own behalf I wish to express sincere thanks for your invaluable contribution towards the success of the 2nd annual Independence Family Fun Day. Without your contribution this event could not have been the success it turned out to be.

Please be advised that the GACACF has a check for you as a small token of its appreciation for the kind contribution of your outstanding and unique cultural talent. Kindly share our sentiments with Ingrid and the kids (especially Miss Guyana). I would appreciate your forwarding your address to me as soon as possible so as to ensure this check is mailed to you shortly.

Again, thanks for contributing your time and talent once again and I look forward to working with you in the future.

Dear Slingshot,
I have seen my letter about your visit in the Stabroek News and in the Catholic Standard and others have told me that they noticed them too. People were happy to learn about something good - for a change!
This evening one of our eight-year-olds, Felicia, came to ask if she could talk to you on the phone. But you have left already. I asked her what she wanted to talk to you about and she was very vague. I guess she just wanted 'to talk' ! She may write you a note which I will relay to you.
My love to Ingrid and Annabelle.... and thank you for giving so much pleasure to our girls.
God bless you.

Thank you for your e-mail. I think there should be alot more people praising you for what you have done for those children. Too often people feel if they send a check to a charitable organization at Christmas then they have done their good deed.

Most of us are too busy in our everyday lives to visit with these children. It truly takes a special person like yourself to care enough to make a difference in the lives of those children by taking time from your schedule to visit and entertain them.

I saw pictures of the boys at the Bosco Orphanage online and it breaks my heart to know that those children are abandoned. I'm sure each with their own unique story of how they arrived at the Orphanage.

I'm so glad that you took the time to bring joy and laughter to the faces of so many children. May God continue to bless you.

My husband and I were considering the possibility of adopting two brothers, six and nine yrs old from the Bosco Orphanage. Sling … Good things are happening!!

“Dear Editor,

SO OFTEN we hear of unfortunate happenings in our country. I think it is worth reporting some good things that are happening also.

Last Saturday May 21, the girls of St. Ann's Orphanage and the boys of St. John Bosco's in Plaisance were treated to a fest of songs and entertainment by John Drepaul, alias Slingshot.

As a child, John had suffered by being a homeless orphan himself, so he has always had a special interest in children in unfortunate circumstances. Since last Christmas, he had promised me that when he came for Mash in February, he would give some of his time to making our children happy. But February Mash was knocked out by the flood, so he said; "When I come for the May happening".

So, although there is not much of a Mash in May and in spite of a sprained ankle, he kept his word and came to give us the concert he had promised. For over an hour, he, his wife Ingrid and some of his friends sang and entertained us, and his five-year-old daughter Annabelle made friends with our girls.

He told us that he learnt to love and to give to other from the Jagan family who befriended him when he was a homeless youngster in Corentyne. We are hoping that our children will also learn to love and to give others through the kindness of so many others who come to bring joy and happiness to them.

God bless Slingshot and all those who give us a helping hand.

Sister Mary Peter Ngui”

. . . . . . .
Tan ...
Thank you so very much for bringing this to my attention ...
As usual, and in my own little way, and without any sort of fanfare, I continue and will always continue to do what I was placed on this earth to do: serve others less fortunate...
Because it was strangers who reached out to me when I was a teenager and living alone at a beach house... at No. 63...
Now, if this is a curse, then I'm blessed with it...!!! Won't you say...?
Looking forward to -- and raring to go for -- Folk Fest 2005...! ;-))
Best regards to the gang for me...

“Slingshot came – with Ingrid and Annabelle. All three were a hit with our girls. The boys from Plaisance came to swell the crowd.
The concert was great. The children took part and enjoyed clapping and singing and dancing – a whole hour in which they could forget about rules and homework and other restrictions and simply express themselves… Very good for the spirit!
Thank you, Slingshot. They will remember this for a long time to come.

Hello John;
It was so nice running into you at York College for Guyana Day. After so many years you still have the enormous energy you are noted for….. Wow!!!!
Anyway, I just want you to know I love every minute of your performance. But I was so disappointed when the promoters cut short your act.
Tell them for me that next time they should mix the program properly. It was so tacky with all the “Bollywood” imitations. No wonder some people were seen walking out of the auditorium.
John, you keep up your level of performance like I know you always will, since the days of Tropical Waves in the 80’s. Don’t compromise your standards for anyone!!!!!!
Best wishes and love from Shirley

I wish the earlier entertainers had not taken up so much time leaving you and the others with so little time to do your thing. The organizers were so rude when they didn’t allow you to continue.
Many acts before you were so boring with the same thing one after the other! But you were so professional with your performance that I was amazed when you told the audience that you had injured your ankle in Tampa!

Hi Slingshot,
I will introduce myself to you. […] I am a Nevisian Indian but now I have settled in England.
I was watching OBE TV and your videos came on and I fell in love with
your music but it seems like I can't get your CDs in England. However, I
bought 4 of your CDs over the Internet from Hyper-Music.com (the only
ones they had ). They are called "Remembering ( Beeda's Song)", "Sweet
Island Woman", "Jump for Carnival" and "Home Sweet Home". All 4 CDs are
really nice. Is there any way I can get hold of the rest of your CDs ?
Bye for now,
Valda

Sorry to hear about your ankle. Heard your presentation was great. The Guyana Day Show on Sunday is at York College not St. John's.
See you Sunday.

John,
Thought I'd check to see how you were doing after Sunday. Hope everything's OK. In body and mind, my Brother!
I was back stage when I heard the commotion during your performance. When I realized what had happened I say you getting back on stage, and talking with the MC.
By the way, your act was a tremendous crowd-pleaser, as usual. Good job! Don't die too soon, right! Let me know how you're doing.
Please give my regards to Ingrid.

John aka Slingshot…! I recently found out that you were one of the LB's.
Check with Vish for Rudi's phone number but don't be too upset if you don't get too much of a response from him. He is such a recluse these days.

By the way, Slingshot, I hope you were not badly hurt when you fell near the stage. I saw you going down but you came up quickly.
Take care ……………. And keep doing good for our Guyana!!

Hi Slingshot! Hope you are ok. We were at the Tampa concert and enjoyed your performance very, very much. What you did made us very proud to be Guyanese. I was very worried when you slipped near the stage. Are you hurt badly? Because we heard a loud sound coming from the microphone.
Call me at […] and let me know how you are feeling and if your leg is ok, cause I saw you limping holding on to Ingrid.
Love to your family from your fan Lynn.

Hi John,

During the sixties and the seventies, many of our generation who did not care very much for the politics of the times, were forced to pursue our dreams in foreign lands. Thanks to the computer and the advent of the internet, long lost friends and acquaintances are being brought together in a manner that none of us ever dreamed or imagined.

Our boyhood days at the 63 Village beach-house are some of the most treasured memories of the times. Guyana, and especially the Corentyne, Berbice area has produced some of the most brilliant minds in the universe, in the form of doctors, lawyers, scientists, and foreign dignitaries. Guyana would have been one of the most powerful nations on the earth if only we all had the wherewithal to remain in our native land. I knew back then that you were one of the most talented of our generation, and were destined to leave your mark in the entertainment and musical arena, and I was right.

During the past thirty something years, most Guyanese abroad have been so pre-occupied with their careers and family, that they have lost touch with many of their dearest friends and most treasured memories of a beautiful place and time. I am sure that I express the sentiments of many, in acknowledging your contribution to the Skeldon Group and to your own Tropical Waves website, in recapturing many of these memories; perhaps for one more brief moment of our transient time here on earth.

Your audio CD’s and music videos were not only entertaining to me and my wife but were also very educational and enlightening to our children. The lyrics to your songs are beautiful and you do a great job singing them. We especially liked “Golden Locket” and “Sweet Island Woman’.

Congratulate Ingrid on her co-writing too please. The two of you do a fantastic job. Thanks for bringing so much joy to so many people and for singing about our Beautiful Guyana and for not letting us forget where we come from. Your “Dr Slingshot’’ video is really good and funny too. Olive liked that one very much.

Keep up the good work John. In spite of the hardships in your life, you have emerged with flying colors, making us all proud of ourselves once again as Guyanese.

With sincerest regards to your family

Your friend
Dr. Ronald Budhram, PhD
Professor of Chemistry

Mr. Slingshot:
Where in Guyana can I get to legally buy your CDs? I don’t want to buy it off the street. I know you guys work real hard to make your CDs. So why rob you all by going and buy it elsewhere?
I really respect what you are doing for yourself and your country. I, too, would like to do something for my country, Guyana. But I have to start by supporting you and other Guyanese artistes here at home.
Your music is very interesting. It different. Not like what the other fellows are doing.
Guyana can proudly say that your musical style is a uniquely “Guyanese” one. I would say that all Guyanese should copy it as one of their own from now on!
Thank you for being one of us ordinary people.
Here is my phone number and address […] Give me a call when you come to Guyana.
